The Buckmarsh

Buckmarsh is inhabited by satyrs, elves and treants. They follow the Circle of Decomposition, a collective sentience that flows through the wetlands. Death is just a step away from feeding new life. Spores, fungi and tiny worms are sacred to them.

Mischievous sprites also call Buckmarsh their home, as well as other magical entities that take refuge in the depths of the swamps

Moonfang and Avatar of the Father

The residents of Buckmarsh pray to the Circle of Decomposition – nature itself – and the forest at times manifests into avatars to aid its protectors.

Unity ensures survival

Buckmarshers divide into small tribes. While their leaders, territories and customs vary, they all share a fighting style: charging into and from dense terrain others find impassable and relying on the initial impact of their spears and horns, much akin to a cavalry charge.

Buckmarsh Stalkers are a special tribe of warriors, both satyr and elven, who take in the blessing of The Spore. By taking in the spirit of Circle of Decomposition, Stalkers become one with the wetlands, living off the land and forming a highly spiritual tribe of their own.

From the tribes rise powerful and fearless heroes, some with great strength, some with minds for leadership, others with an affinity to magicks of the land.

The rare offspring with both elven and satyr bloodlines, or at times even local fae, are revered and often adopted to be specially trained. They often first live secluded lives, learning the ins and outs of the wetland life, and then travel between tribes giving aid to everyone – settling disputes, battling rampaging beasts and serving as seers and spiritual guides.

One of the best known of such is called Nimue (above) by the locals, a name given by the tribes to this mysterious character who never speaks of her origins – as is customary to those trained for such service.

There are many beasts that nest in the Buckmarsh. Some of the fierces are the arachnoid matrons. They prey on smaller animals of Buckmarsh, but are eager to band together with the Tribes when the wetlands face adversity.

Labeled as Gurr Spiders by some poachers, referencing the fierce feline breeds of Basilea, these beasts are feared by those who wander into the marshes with ill intent.

Other great beasts that converse with the tribes and join them on battle in dire need are the great deer (which some say the Buckmarsh originally has gained it’s name). Their great strength and fierce loyalty to the Circle benefit the tribes.

“Join us in the deep, deep
In depths the tears you weep, weep
Will merge with lovely, sweet peat
And there’s no air to scream.”

Titled hatefully as “harpies”, poachers and occasional invaders find themselves preyed on by trickster sprites – a kind of fae that lives in liminal spaces between planes. They are integrally linked to the flora of Buckmarsh and the deep bog pits. They are also eager to expand their magicks and living space when they can, but cannot travel far from their homes without assistance.

Furthermore, sprites and fae spirits not only arise from the deep bogs. Those that are tied integrally to trees, small and large and everything in between, are also eager to participate in the business of the land.

The Swamp Herders are priests of Circle of Decomposition of the highest order. They encompass the dual nature of the Circle – both decomposition (called the Wiltfather), and blooming of new life. It is not beneath them to personally join battles when needed.

The marsh sprites live in literal symbiosis with trees and flora. You would take a risk trying to log Buckmarsh trees – they just might swing back at you.

Vengeful sprites join the Buckmarshers – they both want to defend their wet spots, and spread their magic into far away ponds to claim those wetlands for their own.
